The Perils of Laziness

Daily Devotional – Tuesday, June 10, 2025
Laziness casts one into a deep sleep, and an idle person will suffer hunger.
Proverbs 19:15 (NKJV)

Have you ever had one of those days where you just want to stay in bed, hit snooze a dozen times, and avoid everything on your to-do list? We have all been there. Rest is a gift from God, but when it turns into avoidance or a habit of doing nothing, it becomes laziness.

Cast Into a Deep Sleep

Laziness steals time and lulls us into a kind of sleep that affects every area of our lives. It is about losing our sense of direction and motivation. The longer we stay in that state, the more disconnected we become from the things that bring real meaning: our work, our relationships, and our faith.

Moreover, if we avoid effort, if we live without purpose, we will end up empty; not just in our wallets but in our souls. God designed us to be people of action, to wake up every day with a sense of purpose and a desire to do our part in His plan.

The Perils of Laziness

This doesn’t mean we need to hustle nonstop. It means we stay faithful, responsible, and intentional with the time and gifts God has given us. God honors the effort. He meets us in our work and uses it to shape us.

Is there something you have been putting off that God may be nudging you to start? Are there areas in your life where you feel spiritually “asleep”? What would it look like to wake up and step into your purpose today?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me purpose. Help me shake off the laziness and distraction that sometimes creep in. I want to live fully awake and fully alive in You.
