The Perils of a Broken Spirit

Daily Devotional – Monday, June 23, 2025
The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness, but who can bear a broken spirit?
Proverbs 18:14 (NKJV)

Life often throws many pains at us. It might be a physical condition, an emotionally draining situation, or even emotional pain. However, you can fight through a cold or recover from a broken bone, but when your heart is broken or your spirit is weighed down by discouragement, it feels almost impossible to keep going.

Who Can Bear It?

Our key text reminds us how powerful our inner world is. Our bodies may get sick, but if our spirit, the deep place inside where hope and strength live, is strong, we can still stand. When that part of us breaks down, when we lose hope or feel forgotten, everything becomes heavier. Even getting out of bed can feel like too much.

That is why Jesus does not just heal physical wounds. He came to heal hearts, too. He came for the tired, the defeated, the ones who smile on the outside but are falling apart inside. He sees when your spirit is crushed and does not ask you to pretend you are okay. He invites you to come to Him, just as you are.

The Perils of a Broken Spirit

If your spirit feels strong today, thank God for that strength and use it to encourage someone else. If your spirit feels broken or bruised, remember God is near you. He is ready to carry what you cannot. By all means, do not entertain a broken spirit.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, You know when my heart feels heavy, when I don’t even feel like praying. Please lift my spirit, remind me I am not alone, and give me hope to keep going.
