Our Father in Heaven

Our Father in heaven…
Matthew 6:7 (NKJV)

Today, as I was reflecting on the first words of the Lord’s Prayer, I understood why Jesus cautions us against using many words in prayer. When we say, “Our Father in heaven” (Matthew 6:9), we must realize how privileged we are and how this affirmation works to our advantage.

Our Best Interests

A father has the best interest of his children at heart. He is delighted to meet the needs of his offspring. His greatest concern is the welfare of little ones. Therefore, prayer should not be a desperate attempt to cajole God to prove He loves us by answering our prayers.

Further, our Father already knows what we need before we even open our mouths. When my children want something from me, they don’t resort to long stories. Our interactions are usually for strengthening our relationships, not for them to present shopping lists. That is what prayer is all about: God building relationships with human beings.

Our Father in Heaven

Moreover, our Father knows exactly what we need, not just what we want. He does not always give us what we ask for because He has better plans for us. He knows what we don’t know and understands that if He fulfills some of our prayers, we will not be happy in the long run.

Take a moment to meditate on the fact that God is your Father. How will that change the way you approach Him in prayer? Will you get rid of the fear, doubts, and ‘many words’ and embrace an attitude of faith, trust, and gratitude?

Prayer
Almighty God, I am delighted to know You are my Father, and I can approach You with confidence that You have my best interests at heart.
