Heaven’s Roll of Honor

God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.
Hebrews 11:40 (NKJV)

Schools often display a roll of honor for exemplary performers in the history of respective institutions. The kingdom of God, too, has a list of heroes, which all believers should endeavor to appear in.

Heroes of Faith

Hebrews 11 gives us a glimpse of those whom heaven has honored. They include Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and Moses. The writer of this epistle, realizing that the list is inexhaustive, asserts, “And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of…” (Verse 32).

How did these individuals obtain a good testimony? They exercised faith, which “is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Verse 11). They simply believed God and obeyed Him, despite their human and circumstantial limitations.

Now, you may ask, is there room for more heroes, like you? Absolutely! Our key text indicates that God has withheld their rewards until you become part of that group! What a wonderful promise! Heaven is waiting for you to claim your slot in its roll of honor!

The writer of Hebrews was not able to list all the heroes, but God has no such limitations. He is waiting for you. If you really desire to join the esteemed company of Abraham, Paul, John, and so on, all you have to do is believe in Jesus. In the words of an old hymn, all God wants you to do is ‘trust and obey.’

Almighty God, thank You for offering me the opportunity to be on Your roll of honor. Increase my faith and empower me to obey You.
