The Blessing of Confession

Daily Devotional – Saturday, July 26, 2025
He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.
Proverbs 28:13 (NKJV)

A group of young people is in court, accused of various offenses following street protests. The prosecutor reads the charges, and all but one youth plead not guilty. Everyone turns to look at the black sheep. Most of his co-accused laugh at him.

He Who Confesses

The judge turns to the guilty man. “Because you have decided not to waste the court’s time and admitted your crimes, I hereby acquit you, but don’t commit the offense again.” She says, before turning to the remaining youth.

The acquitted man is shocked. He has to be reminded to leave the courtroom. His colleagues look at him with envy, perhaps regretting why they did not follow his example. The free man now enjoys the blessing of confession, unless he repeats the offense.

The Blessing of Confession

Solomon had such a person in mind when he wrote today’s key text. The youth who refused to confess their crimes may end up in jail while their mate is free to continue living and enjoying life.

Similarly, God is willing to forgive and restore us if we admit our guilt and forsake our evil ways. Consequently, we enjoy freedom from guilt and indescribable peace. In contrast, when we hold on to our wickedness and refuse the forgiveness Christ offers freely, we end up with a load of guilt, fear of punishment, and stagnation in life.

What will you choose today? The blessing of confession or the guilt and pain of unconfessed sin?

Prayer
Holy Spirit, convict me of my sins, lead me to sincere confession, and help me enjoy the blessings of being free from guilt.
