Living on Autopilot

Daily Devotional – Monday, August 4, 2025
Therefore, do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
Ephesians 5:17 (NKJV)

An ‘autopilot’ is a system that lets a plane fly on its own, without the pilot needing to steer it all the time. The term also refers to doing things out of habit without really thinking about them or running on routine instead of making mindful, intentional choices.

Drifting Through Life

Does that term sound familiar? How often do we do what everyone else is doing, scrolling through our phones, checking off our to-do lists, but never really stopping to ask what God wants of us? That is the gist of today’s key text.

The Apostle Paul wants believers to apply wisdom in their lives, which would entail finding out the will of God. The main purpose of their lives should be to please God. The opposite is living without a clear purpose in life. It entails getting so busy that we forget to include God in the process and often making wild or reckless decisions.

Living on Autopilot

Thankfully, God, through His word, has revealed His will clearly, as we read in Micah 6:8, “And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” (NIV).

Living wisely means being intentional. Start by asking God, “What do You want me to do?” Next, ask yourself today, “How do I treat people? How do I handle my time? Am I acting in love or just reacting emotionally? Am I living on autopilot or purposefully?

Prayer
Loving Father in heaven, help me to know and live by Your will. I want to live purposefully and intentionally, not on autopilot.
