When Love Covers Offenses

Daily Devotional – Wednesday, August 6, 2025
He who covers a transgression seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates friends.
Proverbs 17:9 (NKJV)

Think about the last time someone said something unkind or let you down. The human tendency is to hold onto the offense, talk about it with others, or replay it in your mind. Today’s guiding verse, however, reminds us that when we truly care about people, we don’t keep pointing out their mistakes. Rather, we show grace.

He Who Repeats a Matter

Honor, harmony, and loyalty were highly valued in ancient Hebrew culture. It was deemed damaging and polarizing to repeat or reveal an offense, for instance, by gossiping or harboring resentment. Contrarily, choosing prudence, forgiveness, and reconciliation with the intention of covering an offense preserved unity and trust.

Concealing a fault doesn’t mean pretending it never happened or ignoring pain. It means choosing not to make things worse. It is deciding to forgive, to move on, and not to spread the hurt. When we constantly bring up someone’s faults, it damages trust and drives people apart. But when we choose love, we protect our friendships, even when they have been tested.

When Love Covers Offenses

God does this with us all the time. He sees our flaws, yet still offers us grace and second chances. And He calls us to do the same for others. Relationships are messy, but God-inspired love makes room for forgiveness and healing.

Ask yourself: Am I quick to forgive or quick to point fingers? Do I bring peace, or do I stir up drama? Let love cover the offense and pain. Let grace shape your response.

Prayer
Almighty God, thank You for the way You forgive me, again and again. Teach me not to hold grudges or spread hurt, but to cover offenses with love.
