A River of Justice

Daily Devotional – Wednesday, August 13, 2025
But let justice run down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.
Amos 5:24 (NKJV)

In the time of Amos, the people of Israel were faithful to keep up their religious appearances. While their hands were lifted in worship, those same hands were guilty of injustice. The poor were mistreated, the vulnerable ignored, and those in power cared more about profit than people.

Righteousness Like a Mighty Stream

Religious activity was booming. Temple celebrations were lively, sacrifices were frequent, and songs of worship filled the air. Beneath all the noise and ceremony, however, the worship had lost its heart. People assumed that keeping up with these outward traditions was enough to earn God’s favor and blessing. Yet, in their everyday lives, they were cheating in business, taking advantage of the weak, and leading with selfish motives.

God, speaking through Amos, expressed his displeasure. How could the same people who claimed to worship you mistreat the vulnerable in the society? He wanted justice that moves powerfully, like a roaring river after the rains, and righteousness that flows steadily, like a spring that never dries up.

A River of Justice

Real worship is not just in the sanctuary but in how we treat people outside its walls. God is calling us to live our faith in action. God is not looking for a drizzle of kindness. He wants a flood of fairness, compassion, and truth pouring out of us every day, at home, at work, in our communities, and even toward those who may never thank us.

Prayer
Lord, help me to worship You not just with my lips, but with my life. Let my actions speak of Your love and justice so clearly that others can see You through me.
