Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
Galatians 5:1 (NKJV)
A farmer once opened the door of a cage and set a bird free. Instead of flying away, though, the bird sat at the edge, hesitant and unsure. It had lived in confinement for so long that freedom felt strange. Sometimes we do the same thing spiritually. Christ has set us free, but we are tempted to slip back into old patterns of bondage.
The Weight of a Yoke
Paul speaks into a real struggle in the early church. False teachers had convinced the Galatian believers that faith in Jesus was not enough. Converts were informed that they also needed to follow strict Jewish laws to be right with God.
Paul pushes back strongly. He affirms that Christ’s sacrifice was complete. To add rules and rituals as a way to “earn” God’s love was like voluntarily stepping back into chains after being released.
Breaking Free from Spiritual Chains
Freedom does not mean doing whatever we want. It’s freedom from guilt, fear, shame, and the heavy weight of trying to prove ourselves to God. It is freedom to live loved, to live forgiven, and to walk in the Spirit instead of striving in our strength.
We may not be pressured to follow ancient laws, but many of us still carry invisible cages. Maybe it is perfectionism, which entails believing God’s love depends on our performance. Maybe it is guilt from the past that won’t let go. Or maybe it is fear of what others think.
Paul reminds us that Christ has already set us free. Our job is to stand firm in that freedom, refusing to put the old chains back on.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for setting me free. Help me not to return to the weight of guilt or self-effort, but to walk daily in the freedom of Your grace.
