How to Find Real, Enduring Satisfaction and Rest

…whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.
John 4:14 (NKJV)

As she approached the well of Jacob in the scorching midday sun, the Samaritan woman felt empty. Deep inside her was an unfulfilled need for satisfaction and approval. Not even having been married five times before and being in a relationship currently had satisfied her craving.

He Will Never Thirst

Apparently, her fellow villagers did not make life easy for her. How else can we explain her visit to the well at such an unusual hour? Why were other women not with her? It is possible people in the village had given up on her ever changing to become a virtuous woman.

Yet, this woman’s story mirrors the experiences of all of us. How often do we seek satisfaction in alcohol, illicit drugs, sexual relations, human company, food, movies, social media, and other avenues but end up unsatiated?

How to Find Real, Enduring Satisfaction and Rest

Thankfully, we can put this incessant and futile search for fulfillment to a stop by drinking from an eternal well, like the woman at the well. The vacuum in our hearts is not fundamentally for material things and human approval but for the One who created us. Only Jesus can fill our hearts and lives and quench our thirst for meaning in life.

Today, search deep inside your heart. Have you invited Jesus to fill your heart? Is He the sole owner of your thoughts and affections, or have you reserved some space for earthly pleasures? Remember, until you surrender to Jesus, you will never find satisfaction and rest for your soul.

Lord Jesus, come and fill my heart and life. I have realized that no material possession, pleasure, or human approval will fill the void in my life.
