How Small Things Lead to Big Slips

Daily Devotional – Monday, September 15, 2025
Therefore, we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.
Hebrews 2:1 (NKJV)

A sailor once shared how, on a calm evening, he dozed off for just a little while. When he woke up, his boat had quietly drifted miles from the shore. The current was not violent. In fact, it was slow and steady, almost unnoticeable. That is comparable to how our hearts can slip away from God without us realizing it.

Lest We Drift Away

The writer of Hebrews was speaking to believers who were facing pressure and discouragement. Some of them were tempted to slide back into old habits or take their faith lightly. He reminded them (and us) to stay alert.

We should not allow what we have heard about Jesus to fade into the background. Spiritual drift rarely starts with open rebellion. More often, it begins with small distractions, skipped prayers, missed gatherings, or choosing entertainment over time with God.

How Small Things Lead to Big Slips

Paying attention to God’s Word should not lead us to fear messing up. Rather, we are supposed to stay close to the One who saves and sustains us. Just like a sailor uses an anchor to stay steady, we stay grounded by intentionally connecting with Jesus: by studying Scripture, praying, worshiping with others, and obeying His voice even in small things.

Are there areas where you have been drifting without noticing? Maybe your Bible has stayed closed for a while, or you have been avoiding conversations with God. Ask Him to draw you close again and spend a few quiet minutes thanking God.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, keep me anchored in You. When life’s distractions try to pull me away, remind me of Your truth. Help me pay attention to Your voice and walk closely with You every day.
