Hearing God Above the Noise

Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.

Imagine scrolling through social media on a busy day. Your feed is packed with influencers, ads, and friends all insisting they have found the “real secret to happiness.” Yesterday’s advice said one thing. Today you get completely opposite information. If you tried to follow every voice, you’d quickly feel drained, confused, and pulled in a dozen directions.

Voices Everywhere

The Christians in Colossae faced a similar challenge. Their world was full of competing philosophies, cultural traditions, and religious practices. Some sounded wise but subtly left Jesus out of the picture.

That is why Paul gave them the warning in today’s key text. His message is for us, too. Our culture bombards us with opinions, self-help trends, and shifting values. Many of these ideas seem harmless, or even helpful, but without Christ at the center, they can lead us astray.

Hearing God Above the Noise

Staying grounded in Christ doesn’t mean rejecting all new ideas or learning. It means holding every message up to the light of God’s Word. Before adopting a popular trend, a life philosophy, or even advice from friends, ask: Does this line up with Jesus’ teaching? Will it draw me closer to Him or distract me from His path?

Anchoring our identity and decisions in Christ protects us from spiritual drift and gives us the stability we crave in an unpredictable world.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me keep my heart and mind anchored in You. When the world offers countless voices and promises, give me wisdom to discern Your truth.
