Now therefore, let Me alone, that My wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them. And I will make of you a great nation.
Exodus 32:10 (NKJV)
Imagine being offered your dream promotion at work, but only if your difficult colleagues get fired. Tempting, right? You would finally be free of the constant complaints, the unnecessary drama, and the headaches.
That is the kind of choice Moses faced when God offered to wipe out Israel for worshipping a golden calf and build a whole new nation through him.
If You Don’t Forgive Them
If anyone had reason to agree, it was Moses. The Israelites had tested his patience over and over. Leading them felt like herding stubborn sheep. Yet, when God laid out the offer, Moses did the unthinkable. He said no. Instead, he pleaded with God to forgive the very people who had turned their backs on Him. He even went as far as asking God to blot his name out of the book of life (read verses 31-32).
The Temptation of Selfish Gain
Moses could have chosen comfort and glory, but he chose compassion. He valued the people’s lives over his own legacy. How often do we get that kind of choice?
Maybe not on Moses’ scale, but we all face smaller versions, for example, moments where we can either think of ourselves first or put someone else’s needs ahead of our own. It might mean sharing resources when it is inconvenient, forgiving someone who hurt us deeply, or praying for those who frustrate us most.
True Christlike conduct and love often mean standing in the gap for others, even when it costs us something.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, teach me to put others before myself. Give me a heart that loves, forgives, and intercedes without selfishness.
