When the Climb Becomes Difficult

Daily Devotional – Thursday, October 3, 2025
I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 3:14 (NIV)

A few years ago, I watched a documentary about mountain climbers tackling Mount Everest. What struck me most was not the climbers who reached the summit, but those who kept pressing on even when storms, exhaustion, and altitude sickness slowed them down.

Finishing Well

Some never made it to the very top, but the determination to keep going despite setbacks was inspiring. Their goal was not simply to compete with others; it was to reach higher than they ever had before.

That picture reminds me of Paul’s words to the Philippians. Paul admitted he was not perfect and had not “arrived,” but that did not stop him. His mindset was forward-looking. Like the climbers, he pressed on, step by step, toward the ultimate goal, which is eternal life with Christ.

In the Christian journey, we often face “storms” of our own: personal failures, temptations, discouragement, or the weight of life’s struggles. But Paul reminds us not to dwell on what’s behind. Instead, we keep climbing, focusing on the upward call of God.

When the Climb Becomes Difficult

What matters isn’t how quickly you move compared to others. What matters is that you keep pressing forward with your eyes fixed on Jesus. Each act of faith, every prayer whispered, and every temptation resisted, is like another step higher up the mountain.

Finishing the race of faith isn’t about being first. It’s about endurance, perseverance, and trust. God doesn’t call us to be the fastest or the strongest. He calls us to be faithful. And at the finish line, the prize is waiting: life forever with Him.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me keep pressing on, one step at a time, until I reach the goal You have set before me. Strengthen me to stay faithful, no matter how tough the climb.
