A Race Worth Running

Daily Devotional – Sunday, October 5, 2025
Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.
1 Corinthians 9:25 (NIV)

The toughest battles are often not fought on battlefields but within our own hearts and minds. Bringing our thoughts, emotions, and actions under control is never easy, but it is essential for spiritual growth. The Apostle Paul compared the Christian life to that of an athlete who must practice strict discipline and self-control in order to win a prize.

The Battle Within

Eliud Kipchoge, Kenya’s legendary marathon runner, attributes his success to both talent and discipline. He carefully watches his diet, maintains a consistent training schedule, and even guards his thought life. Kipchoge once said that only disciplined people are truly free, because without discipline, you become a slave to moods and passions.

In the same way, Paul reminds us that athletes compete for a crown that eventually fades, but believers are running for a crown that lasts forever. This eternal reward doesn’t come by chance. It requires intentional choices such as time in prayer, studying Scripture, saying no to sin, and resisting distractions that crowd out God. Just as Kipchoge sacrifices certain comforts to be the best, we must deny ourselves for the sake of Christ.

A Race Worth Running

Victory comes when you bring your desires and impulses under God’s control. Self-control doesn’t mean relying on sheer willpower but leaning on God’s grace to say no to what dishonors Him and yes to what pleases Him.

So, how are you practicing self-control today? Are you mastering your passions, or are they mastering you? Ask God for His strength and take a step toward victory.

Prayer
Almighty God, help me by Your grace to conquer myself and live a disciplined life that honors You.
