The Language of Surrender

Daily Devotional – Monday, October 6, 2025
For this reason, I kneel before the Father.
Ephesians 3:14 (NIV)

Christians often wonder whether there is a mandatory posture for prayer. The simple answer is no. God is always ready to hear us, whether we are sitting at our desks, lying in bed, walking down the street, or even washing dishes. Prayer is about the posture of the heart more than the position of the body.

Bowed Knees, Open Hearts

I once saw a little child tug at their mother’s dress in the middle of a busy marketplace. Despite the noise and chaos, the mother immediately leaned down to listen. That’s exactly how God responds when we call on Him: instantly and lovingly, no matter where we are.

Still, Scripture shows us that kneeling held special meaning for many of God’s people. Paul, for instance, mentioned bowing his knees before the Father. In Jewish tradition, kneeling symbolized humility and surrender. It was a way of physically expressing, “Lord, I’m not in charge; You are.”

The Language of Surrender

Kneeling won’t earn us extra points with God, but it does remind us of who He is and who we are. It positions our hearts in reverence, stripping away pride and replacing it with dependence. Sometimes, when words fail, a bent knee says it all: “I surrender.”

So yes, pray in bed, in the car, or on a morning walk, but also take moments to bow your knees before God. That simple act can deepen your awareness of His greatness and your need for Him.

When was the last time you knelt in prayer? Perhaps today is a good day to humble yourself before Him in this way.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, today I bow my knees before You, acknowledging that You are Lord over every part of my life.
