Praise in the Wilderness

Daily Devotional—Wednesday, October 8, 2025
Thus I will bless You while I live. I will lift up my hands in Your name.
Psalms 63:4 (NKJV)

David was running away from his enemies when he wrote Psalm 63. Imagine being on the run, cut off from comfort and safety, yet still lifting your voice to God in worship. Instead of crying for rescue, as he often did in other psalms, David chose gratitude. His longing wasn’t for escape but for God’s presence.

Trust Built in Trials

David declared, “Thus I will bless You while I live. I will lift up my hands in Your name.” That’s powerful! Surrounded by uncertainty, he refused to let circumstances silence his worship. His praise was an act of defiance against fear and despair.

Think of someone singing joyfully while walking in the rain without an umbrella. The storm doesn’t stop them. The song rises above it. That’s exactly what David did. His enemies might have chased him into the desert, but his heart was secure in God.

Praise on the Wilderness

We see a similar spirit in Paul and Silas. Chained in a Philippian jail, they chose to sing hymns. Their bodies were locked up, but their hearts were free in Christ. Later, Paul echoed that same spirit when he told the Philippians, “Rejoice in the Lord always.” (Philippians 4:4).

This kind of faith doesn’t just appear in the hard times. It is cultivated in the everyday walk with God. When we practice praising Him in both blessings and trials, we discover that He is faithful in every circumstance. Like David, we can say with confidence: as long as we have breath, we will lift our hands in praise.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, I will praise You as long as I live, and in Your name I will lift up my hands.
