The God Who Steps Back to Draw Us Near

Daily Devotional – Friday, October 10, 2025
For a brief moment I abandoned you, but with deep compassion I will bring you back.
Isaiah 54:7 (NIV)

There are times in life when God feels distant, when prayers seem to bounce off the ceiling, and faith starts to tremble. Then, it becomes easy to ask, “Lord, where are You? Have You forgotten me?”

The Silence that Speaks Love

A father once took his little daughter to the swimming pool to teach her how to float. “Just relax,” he said, stepping back a few feet. The girl began to panic as she felt the water closing around her. “Daddy, don’t let go!” she cried. Even though she couldn’t see him, her father’s hands hovered just beneath the surface, ready to lift her if she started to sink. When she finally relaxed and trusted, she floated, realizing her father had never truly left her side.

That’s how Israel must have felt in exile. When Babylon conquered them, they believed God had turned away completely. Yet through the prophet Isaiah, God assured them that His absence was only for a “brief moment.” His discipline was meant to refine, not destroy. In time, He would gather them again with mercy and compassion.

The God Who Steps Back to Draw Us Near

Occasionally God allows distance to draw us closer. He uses silence to awaken repentance and trials to strengthen faith. What feels like abandonment is often His loving discipline, teaching us to trust even when we can’t trace Him.

When your heart cries, “Where is God?” remember He’s closer than you think. His mercy lasts longer than your pain, and His love will always bring you back.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, when You seem silent or distant, remind me that Your hands are still beneath me. Teach me to trust in Your mercy and wait for Your restoring love.
