A Shield Built by Prayer

Daily Devotional – Saturday, October 11, 2025
Job would rise early in the morning to offer sacrifices for each of his children, thinking, “Perhaps they have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” This he did regularly.
Job 1:5 (NIV)

A grandmother used to quietly pray for her family every single morning. She had a small notebook where she listed the names of her children, grandchildren, and even neighbors. Years later, after she passed away, her family realized that many of the blessings they enjoyed were answers to those faithful prayers. Her prayers had been their unseen protection, a spiritual hedge around them.

The Hedge of Prayer

Job was that kind of person. While many remember him for his suffering, few notice his deep compassion for others. Job was not only righteous; he was an intercessor. He cared deeply for his family’s spiritual well-being. After his children’s celebrations, he would rise early to offer sacrifices for each one, just in case they had drifted from God in their hearts. Job’s faith moved him to pray when others might have judged or ignored.

His prayers didn’t just express concern. They carried power. Even Satan admitted he couldn’t touch Job’s family because God had placed a hedge of protection around them. That divine covering was built, in part, through Job’s consistent intercession.

A Shield Built by Prayer

In our lives, we too can build hedges around those we love through prayer. Our prayers may be silent, unseen, or even unappreciated, but heaven notices. Someone today may be standing because you prayed for them.

Therefore, who are you praying for? Your children, friends, or church family need your intercession. You may never see all the results, but God surely does.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, teach me to stand in the gap for others. Help me to pray faithfully, believing that my intercession can make a difference in their lives.
