If you, Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand?
Psalm 130:3 (NIV)
A few years ago, a young man borrowed his father’s car and accidentally scraped the side of another vehicle while parking. Terrified, he took photos, wrote a note to the owner, and confessed the incident to his father. To his surprise, his father smiled and said, “Thank you for telling the truth. I’ll take care of it.”
No Record Found
Later that day, when the son anxiously brought it up again, his father simply replied, “It’s already handled. Stop worrying.” The boy’s mistake was real, but his father chose not to keep it on record.
Many of us struggle to believe that God could treat our failures that way. We often replay our sins in our minds, fearing that God might still be holding them against us. In human relationships, people may say, “I forgive you,” yet quietly store the memory for later use. But God is not like that.
When Grace Deletes the File
David understood this truth deeply when he wrote, “If you, Lord, kept a record of sins, who could stand?” He knew that if God kept score, none of us would have any hope. Yet, in the next verse, David reminds us that with God there is forgiveness, and that forgiveness leads us to awe and gratitude.
God’s grace erases, not edits, our record. His mercy is renewed every morning, and His forgiveness is total. When we confess, He not only pardons but also purifies. So, if guilt keeps knocking at your heart, remember this: God’s file on your past has been permanently deleted.
Prayer
Loving Father, thank You for erasing my record of sin. Teach me to walk freely in Your forgiveness each day.
