But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.
Matthew 6:3 (NIV)
A church once organized a quiet outreach for members going through financial struggles. One woman slipped an envelope of money into a basket meant for anonymous gifts. No one saw her name. No photos were taken. A week later, a struggling mother testified that the anonymous gift had helped her feed her children. The donor sat in the congregation, smiling silently, knowing God had seen her act even if no one else did.
Generosity Without a Camera Crew
In modern society, charitable giving is often turned into a public show. As economic gaps widen and disasters increase, many people genuinely need help. Yet alongside this need is a growing trend of giving that focuses more on the giver’s image than the recipient’s relief.
Some donations only happen when cameras are present. Beneficiaries are asked to stand before media crews, praise the donors, and allow strangers into their private struggles. Leaders sometimes arrive with reporters, not because they deeply care, but because they want the publicity that comes with being seen as generous.
When God is the Only Audience
Jesus teaches a different way. He reminds us that true giving happens quietly. He says that when we give, the left hand should not know what the right hand is doing so that our giving remains between us and God. He promises that the Father who sees what is done in secret will reward us openly.
When we remember that everything we own belongs to God, we stop seeking attention for helping others. When we imagine ourselves in the position of those in need, we avoid exposing their pain for personal praise. Humble and respectful charity honors God, uplifts the recipient, and guards our hearts from pride.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, teach me to give quietly, humbly, and for Your glory alone.
