So God heard their groaning, and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.
Exodus 2:24 NIV
Imagine someone waiting so long for relief that they begin to doubt whether help will ever come. That picture reflects how the Israelites felt in Egypt, and it reminds us that God is still near even when he seems silent.
Hope in the Middle of a Long Night
For about four hundred years the Israelites lived in Egypt, and much of that time was spent in harsh labor. They worked endlessly while their sons faced danger. It is easy to see why they wondered whether God still cared for the family of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Their suffering grew from fear. As the Israelites multiplied, the Egyptians worried that this growing people might gain too much influence. Owing to fear, the Egyptians decided to enslave the Israelites to keep the latter under control.
An ordinary Israelite might have questioned what he had done to deserve such hardship. For generations they felt forgotten and worried about their future, especially when Pharaoh ordered the death of their infant boys.
Strength for the Stretched Soul
In time the king of Egypt died, and the people cried out. God heard their groaning, remembered his covenant, and looked upon them with understanding. This stands as one of the most encouraging moments in scripture because it shows that God listens.
The same God listens today. He hears the spouse fighting for a marriage, the parent anxious about a struggling child, and the patient waiting for healing. He is near when the job search becomes discouraging and when addiction clouds hope. God remembers you, and He will act at the right time.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for hearing my groaning and for acting in your time to bring help and relief.
