Whoever digs a pit will fall into it; if someone rolls a stone, it will roll back on them.
Proverbs 26:27 (NIV)
Imagine a farmer who secretly digs a deep hole on his neighbor’s land to trap his livestock. He plans everything carefully and even covers the pit with branches. Days later, while passing through the same area, he forgets where the pit is and ends up falling into the very trap he made. His scheme becomes his downfall. That is the gist of today’s key text.
The Stones that Roll Back
Life is full of situations where people intentionally hurt others through lies, manipulation, or deceit. Solomon highlights that such behavior is dangerous because evil rarely remains contained. The person who creates a snare for others unknowingly sets a path for their own ruin. The pit they dig becomes their prison, and the stone they push eventually returns upon them.
Solomon’s wisdom draws from the experience of hunters who sometimes forgot where they set their traps. In their carelessness, they became victims of their own devices. When we scheme to harm others, we invite the same pain into our own lives. God sees the intentions of every heart, and He cannot be mocked. What we sow, we will eventually reap.
When Evil Comes Full Circle
God’s standard is different. He calls His children to be people of integrity, love, and forgiveness. Instead of plotting evil or seeking revenge when others wrong us, He instructs us to trust Him. Vengeance belongs to God, Our role is to respond with grace because that is what Jesus extends to us.
Let us choose goodness over malice. The rewards of love are far greater than the consequences of evil plots.
Prayer
Dear God, remove every desire to harm others from my heart and teach me to walk in love and forgiveness.
