But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength.
2 Timothy 4:17 (NIV)
An employee is having difficulties presenting a report. Moments before the meeting, her colleagues excuse themselves, leaving her alone. Panic rises inside her as she realizes she must face intimidating executives without support.
The Faithful Companion
Just when she feels overwhelmed, her manager arrives, reassures her, and remains beside her. His presence gives her courage to speak confidently. What once seemed frightening becomes manageable because someone stood with her. God does something similar for His children when others fail them.
Paul knew this experience personally. In his letter to Timothy, he explained that during his first defense, everyone deserted him. Those he expected to stand with him were silent or afraid. Some had harmed him, while others chose self-preservation. Yet Paul did not focus on their betrayal. Instead, he emphasized a greater reality. The Lord stood with him and gave him strength.
Paul faced hostile crowds and powerful authorities, yet God empowered him to preach boldly so that unbelievers would hear the message. God also protected him and ensured that his mission continued. Even without human support, God remained faithful.
The Presence that Gives Courage
You may face moments when people abandon you because of your faith, your struggles, or your determination to do what is right. Standing for truth can be lonely. Friends may distance themselves, and some believers may choose comfort over conviction. Yet God does not abandon His children. He stands with them and strengthens them.
When you feel alone, rejected, or misunderstood, remember Paul’s testimony. Human support may fail, but divine presence never does. The God who strengthened Paul is the same God who stands with you.
Prayer
Thank You, God, for standing by my side when others leave. Help me remain faithful and courageous.
