May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you.
1 Thessalonians 3:12 (NIV)
A river that remains within its confines feeds the land surrounding it, but when it rains a lot, the water spills over and flows into places that were dry before. The vitality that it brings continues beyond the source. The overflow, on the other hand, shows that the river is robust and in excellent condition. The same applies in Christian life.
What Keeps Spreading
In today’s key text, Paul prays that the love of the Thessalonians will grow and flow, not stay restrained and cautious. Christian love doesn’t stay inside. It grows, stretches, and spills over into the outside world, where grace is often hard to find.
Such love doesn’t come from just trying hard. It grows because of the Lord. Love grows and changes like a living being as believers stay close to Christ. It becomes patient when talking, gives freely of its time, and stays calm under pressure. When the source remains undrained, the overflow naturally occurs.
When Love Refuses to Stay Put
Exuberant love impacts all people, not just those who are easy to love. It happens in traffic, at work, in families, and online. It talks to you with kindness, listens to you with modesty, and answers you with gentleness. This love shows who Christ is better than words ever could.
There are many openings today to let love grow. Pick one deliberate action that goes past what is easy or comfortable. Have faith that the Lord will give you what you need and make what you give bigger. When love radiates through everyday diligence, it quietly leads people to God.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, please make my love grow today and let it flow to everyone I meet for Your glory.
