I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgement for every empty word they have spoken.
Matthew 12:36 (NIV)
Most of us have replayed a conversation in our minds and wished we could edit it. A sharp reply in an argument. A sarcastic comment that drew laughs at someone else’s expense. A quick judgment spoken with confidence and very little evidence. I have felt that sinking realization when a sentence left my mouth and I knew it did not reflect Christ. Words linger long after the moment passes.
The Day Our Words Are Reviewed
In Matthew 12, Jesus confronts the Pharisees who accuse Him of working by Satan’s power. Their charge flows from hearts that resist the truth standing in front of them. When He speaks of empty words, He addresses speech that is careless, slanderous, and disconnected from God’s reality. These words are not harmless. They reveal a heart posture that either honors or rejects Him.
Jesus then points to the day of judgement. Every word becomes part of the evidence. Our speech does not save us, yet it testifies about us. Words expose what we believe about Christ. They demonstrate whether we acknowledge God’s work or distort it to fit our egos. What we say about Him and about others reflects the condition of our hearts.
The Consequences of Casual Talk
This warning reaches into ordinary life. I can speak negatively when I feel misunderstood. You may do the same when you feel tired or threatened. In those moments, truth bends and love thins out. Jesus invites us to see that pattern honestly. He also offers forgiveness for careless speech and the Spirit’s help in growing in restraint and integrity.
Listen to what you say today. Stop and think before you say something, joke, or accuse. Check to see if what you say is true to Christ. Admit when you’ve said something wrong, and ask God to give you a heart that is so full of grace that your words are always true.
Prayer
Almighty God, look into my heart and help me speak in a way that always represents Your will faithfully.
