For the word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV)
A man spent much of his time polishing the front door of his house, while dust and dirt gathered inside. Behind the door he had stored away every item that would ever spoil the polished facade of his house. Like this man, many of us present a disguise for the public, yet we have hidden piles of trash in our souls.
Past the Polished Front
Incidentally, we cannot lie to God like we do with human beings. His word reaches far beyond the smiles we struggle to maintain before people. God’s word discerns our motives of generosity, our true pride rather than our false humility, and even our hidden resentment masked by smooth words.
God knows us very well and is not fooled by our speech or our rituals. Even though we may deceive and lead others to believe we are honest, God understands the core of our desires. He perceives our self-centredness, our envy, and all our hidden desires.
Under the Surgeon’s Knife
This piercing, however, is not intended to kill. A surgeon’s knife is a tool to remove something that is detrimental to our lives. God wants us to see ourselves as we really are. He wants us to stop pretending and start repenting. God already knows our worst. But He still invites us to come near through Christ.
Stop trying to look better and ask God to search your heart. Admit to God that you are weak and in need of Him. Ask Him to cleanse and change your desires. God sees your inner workings and gives you the appropriate grace to change your thoughts.
Pray
Dear God, only You understand what is in me. Search my heart, get rid of my hypocrisy and make me the person You want me to be.
