But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
1 John 3:17 (NKJV)
On a designated worship day, needy people in my town queue in front of two shops owned by non-Christians. Here, they receive foodstuff, clothing, and sometimes money. Many of the beneficiaries are former Christians.
Does God’s Love Abide in You?
When I asked one of these converts of a different religion, he intimated that he did not find love among Christians. Apparently, when he needed food, clothing, school fees, and other necessities, no one came through for him.
In today’s key text, John wonders how one can refuse to share material things with the needy yet claim to have God’s love dwelling in him. In other words, we demonstrate God’s love through the way we deal with the needy amongst us.
I Didn’t Find Love There
No amount of preaching, praying, and casting out demons can replace the need to use our material possessions to alleviate the suffering of others, including those of our faith. God’s love is revealed not so much in eloquent testimonies but in the lives we touch practically.
Take a moment today and allow God to speak to you. Is there a needy person who can benefit from your material assistance? How much will you commit from the blessings God has bestowed on you to ease the suffering of another person? If the love of God abides in you, you have the answers, and you know what to do.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, lead me to a person who needs my material assistance, and use me to help that person find Your love in my attitude and actions.
