The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but deliverance is of the LORD.
Proverbs 21:31 (NIV)
Students frequently put in significant effort to prepare before a final exam. They solve practice questions, look over notes, and read textbooks again late at night. Some even set up study groups to help them understand better. On exam day, they enter the room with the hope that all their preparation will pay off.
More Than Your Best Effort
In ancient times, the horse represented readiness for battle. Before going to war, armies made weapons, planned how to fight, and trained their horses. Solomon, on the other hand, asserts that being strong or ready doesn’t always lead to success, as true success often requires divine guidance and wisdom beyond mere preparation. The final word belongs to God.
We, too, make plans, become ready, study, and work diligently to attain our goals. The Bible does not discourage such hard work. In reality, being a competent steward means being cautious in our planning. However, when we start to believe that hard work is all we need to succeed, we are at risk of forgetting the importance of faith and relying on God’s guidance in our endeavours.
When Preparation Meets Providence
When we realise that God is all-powerful, our perspective changes. We are still serious and diligent in our preparation, but we are open to what happens. Disappointment becomes an opportunity to believe that God’s wisdom goes beyond what is clear at first.
Therefore, be as careful with everything you do as a student is when preparing for an exam. Do your best, learn from your mistakes, and make the most of the chances God offers you. Don’t think, though, that just getting ready would make you feel confident. Give your work to God and allow him to handle the outcome.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me prepare faithfully while trusting that you will take care of everything that happens.
