The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, but those of everyone who is hasty surely to poverty.
Proverbs 21:5 (NKJV)
Two farmers had different ideas about how to become ready for planting season. One created his rows, fixed his tools, and set aside seeds weeks ahead of time. The other one waited for the right conditions and finished the work in one afternoon. Months later, the first field was full of thick grain, but the second field had thin, uneven growth all over the soil.
Preparing the Ground Before the Harvest
According to Solomon, success comes from careful planning and consistent effort, rather than just acting. He doesn’t praise being busy or making cold calculations. Instead, he highlights the value of hard work, guided by patience, foresight, and discipline.
We often think that success comes from sudden breakthroughs or excellent timing. In contrast, God often works through people who are faithful over time. Hasty decisions have the capacity to deny us blessings we expect to receive.
The Difference Between Hurry and Wisdom
Planning means making sure that what we do fits with God’s plans and order. We pray, we strategise, we put in the effort, and then we trust God with the outcome. Diligence is a demonstration of faith, a way of telling God that our time, our resources, and the opportunities we have are significant, day in and day out.
Consider the patterns that shape your days. Where might careful thought take the place of haste? What small act of faith could you start doing today to get ready? Pray for wisdom and then work hard all the time. Living in a hurry today is not as beneficial as taking your time and doing things that honour God in the long run.
Pray
Heavenly Father, give me the wisdom to plan well, the patience to work hard, and the faith to give all the results to You.
