But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.
2 Corinthians 3:18 (NKJV)
The Christian journey can be frustrating if we fail to focus on the right things. For example, have you ever felt frustrated with individuals who claim to be Christians but behave otherwise? Better still, do you often feel frustrated with your failure to overcome your character flaws?
What You Keep Looking At
Then you need to listen to the wisdom of today’s key text. It tells us that the change from a sinful person to a saint is not instantaneous but gradual. Change begins when we are open (with an unveiled face) to the searching gaze of the Holy Spirit. That way, we can focus our eyes on Jesus (behold), who initiates the change process.
Notice the phrase ‘are being transformed’. That is where our frustration with ourselves and others should end. While this fact is not an excuse to continue sinning, it reminds us that God works through His Holy Spirit from within. Just as sin invades and permeates our lives progressively, so is the opposite process gradual, albeit more powerful.
Where the Change Begins
Now, what happens when we focus our minds on Jesus? We are changed, from glory to glory, into His image. Here we have echoes of creation, when we were created in the image of God. That godly character that we lost through Adam’s sin, the Holy Spirit is gradually restoring in the lives of those who accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour.
The secret is out! Do you want to have the character of Jesus? Focus on Him and invite the Holy Spirit into your heart. Study and meditate on His character. Engage in genuine prayer and obey His voice. Change will come gradually as you cooperate with God. Remember, also, to pray that your ‘not-so-spiritual’ friends undergo the same process.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, fill me with Your Holy Spirit that I may be like You in thought, attitude, speech, and conduct.
