Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul.
1 Peter 2:11 (NKJV)
You are seated at an airport terminal, or maybe waiting at a train station or bus park. People are constantly moving, announcements are constantly being made, and time seems to stretch. You might scroll your phone or grab something small to eat, but deep down you know you are not staying. Part of you is always tuned to the moment your departure is called.
The Danger of Feeling Too at Home
That is where Peter begins, with identity before instruction. He is reminding us that we are not at home here. When that really sinks in, something shifts. Like in that terminal, we stop clinging to our surroundings once we remember we’re just passing through.
To abstain from fleshly lusts is not a call to mild restraint but decisive refusal. These desires are not neutral. They are in conflict with the soul. The language used is intentional. An internal struggle exists, where uncontrolled desires weaken spiritual understanding, hinder devotion, and shift priorities away from God.
Don’t Get Comfortable Here
If you start treating the terminal like home, you will settle in. You will get comfortable, indulge whatever is available, and lose track of your departure. However, if you stay aware that you are in transit, your choices change. You become more intentional, more careful about what you allow to shape you.
What is really driving your decisions right now? Go back to that picture of yourself waiting to leave. You do not belong there, and you were never meant to. Hold that truth close, and let it guide you to choose what strengthens your soul and keeps you ready to move when God calls. You are a sojourner: abstain from fleshly lusts.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me remember I am just passing through and give me strength to choose what keeps my heart aligned with You.
