Rethinking What Counts

Daily Devotional – Sunday, April 5, 2026
But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ.
Philippians 3:7 (NKJV)

You can do everything right and still build your life on the wrong foundation. Paul understood that more than most people. He was disciplined, respected, and deeply committed to God as he understood Him. If anyone looked like they had their spiritual life together, it was Paul. People would have pointed to him as an example.

Counted As Loss

Then he met Christ, and something shifted inside him. The things that once gave him confidence did not disappear, but they stopped carrying the same weight. He began to see that what he had been trusting in could not truly hold him up.

So when Paul says he “counted” those things as loss, he is showing us that this was a conscious decision. He looked at his life honestly and re-evaluated it. Everything else became secondary in comparison to knowing Christ. It was no longer where he found his identity or his security.

Rethinking What Counts

That same pattern shows up in our lives. We may not share Paul’s background, but we know what it is to rely on something. It could be success, recognition, stability, or simply being needed. These things are not evil in themselves, yet they can quietly become the reason we feel satisfied about ourselves.

Take a moment to reflect on your life. What are you leaning on right now? What feels too important to lose? Bring that before God and loosen your grip, even if it is just a little. Let Christ meet you there and reshape what truly matters in your life.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me to release what I hold too tightly and find my confidence fully in You.
