Now therefore, fear the LORD, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the LORD!
Joshua 24:14 (NKJV)
Near the end of his life, Joshua gathered the people and reminded them how far God had brought them. They were free from Egypt, yet some remnants of Egypt remained. So, he asked them to decide who would truly lead their lives from that point forward.
The Gap Between Leaving and Letting Go
That scene still mirrors life today. You can outwardly progress while internally clinging to outdated patterns. It may not be idols of stone, but things like approval, comfort, or control can quietly take God’s place if you are not paying attention.
Joshua’s call is simple and direct. God wants honesty, not performance. Serving Him in sincerity means your private life matches what you claim in public. It means choosing Him even when it costs you something real, not just when it feels easy or convenient.
One Thing You Didn’t Leave Behind
There is also a clear sense of urgency. You are always choosing something, even when you think you are not. Your daily decisions reveal what truly matters to you. What you prioritise shapes your direction more than what you say or believe.
Today, take a moment to reflect on your true feelings. What is competing for your attention right now? Bring that before God and choose Him again, not out of pressure but out of a genuine desire to walk with Him. A clear choice today can quietly reshape your life over time.
Prayer
Almighty God, help me to choose You honestly and consistently, letting go of anything that takes Your place in my life.
