Delight yourself also in the LORD, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Psalms 37:4 (NKJV)
When Mercy purchased an old violin, the wood was still glossy, and the craftsmanship was admirable. However, when she tried to play it at his home, the sound was rough and graceless. A skilled musician looked at it later and smiled a little, tightening some strings and loosening others. Within minutes, the same violin produced warm, beautiful music. The problem had never been the violin itself. The instrument simply needed proper tuning.
A heart in Harmony With God
The target audience for Psalm 37 were people who were frustrated watching wicked people succeed while those who obeyed God struggled. David wanted his reader to focus on God instead of their frustrations. To delight in God means more than singing hymns or attending church. It implies learning to find real joy, peace and security in Him even when life feels unfair.
That is often where God begins His work in us. Our hearts can easily become tuned to the wrong things. Success, comfort, attention, money or comparison can quietly shape our desires without us noticing. When we spend time with God through prayer, Scripture and obedience, though, He slowly retunes the heart. Like the violin in the musician’s hands, our lives begin producing something healthier, gentler and more pleasing to Him.
When God Retunes the Heart
Our key text is not saying that God gives every person whatever they ask for. Occasionally, He lovingly says yes. Sometimes He says, ‘Wait.’ Sometimes He leads us in a completely different direction. Yet as we continue delighting in Him, we begin noticing something remarkable. Our desires start changing. We want different things because our hearts are no longer centred only on ourselves, but also on what matters to God.
Today, take an honest look at what has been shaping your heart lately. Tell God what you want, and let Him move what seems out of place. Trust His hands even when progress is slow. God knows how to shape a life that will reflect His goodness and bring lasting peace to those who follow closely behind Him.
Prayer
Loving Father in heaven, tune my heart to Your will, for only then will I realise my desires.
