The Danger of Fear-Driven Decisions

Daily Devotional – Monday, May 18, 2026
For thus says the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel: “In returning and rest you shall be saved. In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.” But you would not.
Isaiah 30:15 (NKJV)

Judah was terrified. The Assyrian Empire was on the rise, and nations were surrendering to its might. Reports of war and devastation travelled fast, and fear blanketed Jerusalem. The rulers couldn’t just sit around. However, rather than quietly seeking God, they rushed to Egypt for help, believing that horses, chariots, and political alliances would protect them. God spoke to His people through the prophet Isaiah, warning them about leaning more upon human strength than upon His guidance.

Finding Strength in Quiet Confidence

God told Judah they weren’t safe in Egypt’s army or in man’s plans. “In returning and rest you shall be saved.” He urged them to turn back to Him with confidence instead of panic. They would find their strength in relying quietly on Him, not in frantic effort. Notice, however, the painful ending of this verse, “But you would not.” God offered peace and direction, but the people chose fear-driven solutions instead.

One can understand why they reacted that way. Fear makes people restless. When problems mount, we feel the pressure to resolve them all at once. We seek answers, make quick plans, and depend on whatever feels strongest at the time. Waiting silently before God can often feel slower and less certain than taking matters into our own hands.

The Danger of Fear-Driven Decisions

Today’s guiding verse does not cast aspersions on planning or taking responsibility. The problem was that Judah allowed fear to dominate its decisions more than trust in God. In many ways, we face the same struggle. Anxiety can slowly crowd out prayer and leave us relying more on our understanding than on God’s wisdom and care.

God still invites us to slow down and trust Him sincerely. Today, bring your fears before Him and rest in His wisdom. You will begin to find a deeper kind of strength that panic and striving can never give you.

Prayer
Almighty God, help me trust You calmly and faithfully whenever fear tries to take control of my thoughts and decisions.
