By your patience, possess your souls.
Luke 21:19 (NKJV)
Jesus warned His disciples of the difficult days that lay ahead. He spoke of persecution, betrayal, fear, and suffering. Those must have warnings sounded frightening to the men who listened to Him. However, Christ didn’t tell them to panic or give up. Instead, He pointed them to patience. They were to maintain their unwavering trust in God, even in the face of uncertainty.
Possess Your Souls
The patience mentioned here involves more than simply waiting for problems to disappear. Jesus was talking about enduring under pressure. He knew His followers would go through seasons that would test their courage, faith, and peace of mind. Still, they were not to allow hardship to pull them away from God. Patient trust would help them remain spiritually firm when life became painful and uncertain.
The words “possess your souls” give this verse unusual depth. Jesus spoke as though difficult experiences could slowly take hold of a person from within. Fear can begin controlling thoughts. Anger can shape reactions. Discouragement can suck the hope and clarity out. A person may seem strong on the outside while feeling overwhelmed on the inside. Christ therefore urged His followers to guard their inner lives through patient endurance.
The Battle for Your Inner Peace
This still happens today. A season of stress, disappointment, sickness, conflict, or financial pressure can slowly rob a person of peace and joy. Some become bitter. Others become anxious or emotionally exhausted. That said, the one who keeps trusting God through the trial learns to stay calm, praying, and spiritually grounded. Patience enables the heart to remain steady, even when circumstances persistently pose challenges.
Patience is, therefore, not weakness. It is the quiet strength that keeps a believer close to Christ when life feels heavy. Through patient endurance, we do not allow fear, anger, or despair to take possession of our hearts. Instead, we walk with God day by day, trusting Him to keep our souls steady, secure, and firmly anchored in His care.
Prayer
Almighty God, teach us to trust You and to wait patiently so that our hearts may be at peace and secure in all the trials of life.
