How to Stop Bitterness Before It Spreads

Daily Devotional – Monday, June 1, 2026
…looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled.
Hebrews 12:15 (NKJV)

Some years ago, two of my siblings fell out at a family gathering over a minor disagreement. Initially, the situation was manageable, with just a quiet distance between them. Days turned into weeks, and silence became heavy. The miasma affected other family members, too, and they began to withdraw. What started small slowly changed the atmosphere of the whole home. Everyone noticed; no one spoke. It took almost one year and tremendous effort from one sober sibling for normalcy to return.

Guarding the Heart from Bitterness

Today’s key text invites us to pay attention to both our hearts and our relationships. Falling short of grace here does not mean God has withdrawn His love. Rather, it implies that we are no longer loving others as God does with us. When we cling to hurt, we stop extending the grace we have freely received. The consequence is that relationships begin to deteriorate.

The warning about a root of bitterness is very vivid. Roots are hidden, yet they grow and spread quietly. Bitterness works the same way. It resides in our minds, thrives on memories, and eventually manifests itself in our tone and behaviour. If ignored, it doesn’t stay put; it leaks out into the world around us, touching others.

God, however, has a better way, in grace. We have been forgiven through Christ, and we are called to forgive. This does not mean that pain is insignificant or unimportant. Instead, it suggests that we consciously decide not to allow it to take hold. We can be proactive with issues, speak truth in love, and pursue peace in our everyday relationships with others.

Take a moment today to reflect. Is there some trivial hurt you have been holding onto? Bring it before God and ask for help to let it go. If possible, take a gentle step towards reconciling with the other party. When you choose grace, you create room for healing, not just for yourself but for others.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me soak up Your grace and share it with others so that no bitterness may be in me to hurt them.
