My eyes are ever toward the LORD, for He shall pluck my feet out of the net.
Psalms 25:15 (NKJV)
Most of us know what it feels like to be stuck. Sometimes it is a temptation that keeps resurfacing. Other times it is a strained relationship, a financial challenge, or a situation that seems to have no clear solution. When that happens, our minds naturally gravitate toward the problem. We think about it constantly, turning it over from every angle and wondering how things will ever change. David understood what it meant to face danger and uncertainty. Yet before he mentioned the net, he spoke about where his eyes were fixed. His attention was on the Lord.
Looking Beyond the Trap
The image David uses would have been familiar to the people of his day. Hunters often hid nets along animal trails or near places where birds gathered. The trap was carefully concealed, making it difficult to detect until it was too late. Spiritual dangers often work in much the same way. Temptation rarely arrives looking dangerous. Discouragement can settle in quietly. Fear grows little by little. An unhealthy attitude can take root before we even notice it. What starts off as relatively innocuous can ultimately leave us feeling trapped and overwhelmed.
What is remarkable about this verse is that David doesn’t disregard the danger. He knows the net exists. Faith acknowledges that problems exist and that hardships hurt. He simply refuses to let the trap become the centre of his attention. That is a lesson many of us need. It is possible to spend so much time focusing on what is wrong that we lose sight of the God who is able to help. The more we stare at the problem, the larger it appears. Conversely, the more we look to the Lord, the more clearly we see His power and faithfulness.
How to Trust God When You Feel Trapped
David’s confidence is also striking. He says, “He shall pluck my feet out of the net.” His hope does not rest in his own wisdom, strength, or ability to escape. It rests in God. Some situations in life cannot be fixed by determination alone. We need the Lord’s intervention. The God who sees every hidden danger also knows how to rescue His people. Nothing surprises Him; no trap is too difficult for Him to surmount.
Take a moment today to consider what has been occupying your thoughts. Has your attention been fixed on the trap or on the Lord? The challenges you face may be real, and they may not disappear overnight. Even so, they do not have the last say. God is sovereign over every circumstance. When we keep our eyes on Him, we find strength to trust Him, confidence to follow Him and hope to keep moving forward even before we see the way out.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to keep my eyes on You when challenges threaten to fill my thoughts. Bring to mind that You are superior to any trap, and You will lead me safely through any circumstance.
