Bread flour must be ground. Therefore, he does not thresh it forever, break it with his cartwheel or crush it with his horsemen.
Isaiah 28:28 (NKJV)
Isaiah often used illustrations of spiritual truths taken from scenes that were familiar to the average person. Here he takes his readers to a farmer’s field. After the harvest, wheat had to be threshed to separate the grain from the stalks. It was then ground into flour before it could become bread. Every farmer knew that this work required wisdom. Grain that was not ground could never be used, while grain that was ground endlessly would be ruined. A wise farmer understood both the purpose of the process and the right moment to stop.
When the Grinding Finally Stops
That is the point Isaiah wants us to see. We can easily become preoccupied with the grinding and miss the farmer behind it. He is not careless. He is not impatient. Every decision he makes has a purpose. He knows exactly what each crop wants because different crops need different treatment. When the flour is ready, he stops because there is nothing more to gain by continuing. Isaiah ends this passage by reminding us that such wisdom comes from the Lord, who is “wonderful in counsel and excellent in guidance” (read verse 29).
Some experiences we undergo make us feel as if we are under the grinding stone. A season of waiting stretches longer than expected. One setback is followed by another. You begin to wonder if the pressure will ever ease. Those thoughts are understandable. Even faithful believers ask questions like these. This passage does not dismiss those feelings. Instead, it quietly reminds us that the One directing our lives is infinitely wiser than we are. Nothing He allows is random, careless, or without purpose.
Why God Doesn’t Leave You Under Pressure Forever
Looking back, you can probably think of experiences you would never choose to undergo again. At the time, they felt confusing and painfully unfair. Yet somewhere along the way, your faith became stronger, your priorities changed, or your dependence on God grew deeper. You did not enjoy the process, yet God was accomplishing something that could not be seen in the moment. His work often becomes clearer in hindsight than it does in the middle of the trial.
The encouragement in Isaiah’s imagery lies in what the farmer refuses to do. He does not keep grinding forever. Once the grain is ready, the work is finished. God deals with His children in the same wise and measured way. If you are carrying a heavy burden today, remember that your life is in the hands of a loving Father who knows exactly how much pressure to allow and exactly when it is time to lift it. You can trust his wisdom. You can trust his timing.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me trust in Your wise and loving purposes, even when the pressures of life are hard to understand, knowing that You never cease working for my good.
