Every one of the builders had his sword girded at his side as he built. And the one who sounded the trumpet was beside me.
Nehemiah 4:18 (NKJV)
Rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem was a special kind of construction project. Every new layer of stones offered hope to God’s people, but it also increased the hostility of the enemies who wanted the project to fail. Every morning the builders returned to the wall knowing that an attack could come at any moment. Nehemiah never told them to stop building until the situation was safer. Instead, they continued the work with their weapons close at hand. They laid stones, watched the horizon and trusted God all at the same time. It is a striking picture of people who understood that serving God required commitment as well as constant alertness.
How to Stay Spiritually Alert
There is a lesson here that is easy to miss. Before the builders picked up their weapons, they had already taken their concerns to God in prayer. Their confidence was not in swords or spears but in the Lord who had called them to rebuild the city. Even so, they refused to become careless. Trusting God did not mean ignoring reality. They prayed, stayed watchful, and kept working. Those three habits belonged together.
That balance is just as important today. God has given each of us work to do, whether it is raising a family, running a business, teaching, serving in church, studying, or earning a living. The danger is that we can become so busy doing worthwhile things that we slowly neglect what matters most. A rushed prayer here, a skipped Bible reading there, and before long we are relying more on our routines than on God. Outwardly, everything looks fine. Inwardly, we are becoming vulnerable.
Staying Close to God in a Busy Life
The enemy still knows how to distract God’s people. He does not always tempt us to abandon our responsibilities. Sometimes he simply keeps us so occupied that our relationship with Christ is pushed into the background. That is why we need God’s Word every day. It keeps our thinking clear, it exposes temptation before it can take root, and it reminds us that our greatest strength comes from walking closely with the Lord. We are never too busy to be spiritually alert.
Today, give every task your best effort. Do it honestly, diligently and gratefully, and protect your walk with the Lord. Keep close to His Word, pray regularly, and rely on His strength instead of your own. Like the builders of Nehemiah, keep one hand on the task and the other on the sword that helps you stand firm.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to serve well without ignoring my relationship with You. Make me alert, grounded in Your Word and dependent on Your power in all I do.
