In all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility…
Titus 2:7 (NKJV)
A young apprentice was working for a Christian carpenter. The older man demonstrated his faith in the everyday things of life. He was honest to his customers, he paid his workers fairly, and he never tried to hide his mistakes. One day the apprentice asked him what made him different. “I try to follow Jesus,” the carpenter said. That short conversation stayed with the young man and started a journey that eventually led him to Christ. Looking back years later, he realised it was not just the carpenter’s words that had shaped him. It was the quiet sermon his employer preached through the way he lived.
What People Read Before They Read the Bible
That is the kind of example Paul wanted Titus to set. The churches in Crete certainly needed sound teaching, yet they also needed leaders whose lives gave weight to their message. After all, people often notice our actions before they ever listen to our words. Our response to disappointment, our treatment of others, and our handling of the responsibilities of everyday life can reinforce the gospel we proclaim or raise questions about it. The life of a believer is the first bible many people will ever read.
Paul urged Titus to live with integrity and to let God’s grace mould his character and behaviour. Beneficial works don’t earn God’s acceptance. Instead, they are the evidence that His grace is already at work in us. However, when our actions consistently reflect what we believe, they help others see that the transforming power of Christ is real, not just theoretical.
The Sermon Your Life Is Preaching
Whether we contemplate it or not, every day we are preaching a sermon. Our family members hear it in the way we speak at home. Our colleagues see it in our honesty and our work ethic. Our neighbours see it in our kindness, patience, and willingness to help. We cannot choose whether our lives influence others, but we can choose the kind of message that our influence communicates.
Today, take some time to contemplate what your life is saying about Jesus. Ask the Holy Spirit to mould your attitudes, words, and actions so that they reflect the grace you have received. May those who know you best be encouraged to know Christ more because they have seen His character quietly formed in your life.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for saving me by Your grace and for calling me to represent Christ each day. May my words and actions align harmoniously. Let my life faithfully point others to Jesus.
