Surely, I have calmed and quieted my soul like a weaned child with his mother. Like a weaned child is my soul within me.
Psalms 131:2 (NKJV)
Weaning is one of the first big transitions in a child’s life. A child who has always depended on the mother’s milk must slowly learn to receive nourishment in a different way. That change is rarely easy. There may be tears, frustration, and a longing for what once felt familiar. As time passes, however, the child begins to discover something new. Being close to the mother is no longer about feeding. The child has learned to rest in her presence, content simply to be there.
Why Is My Soul So Restless?
That is the picture David chooses to describe his relationship with God. He is not teaching us about parenting. He is describing what has happened inside his own heart. Earlier in the psalm, David says he had stopped chasing things beyond his understanding and had laid aside pride. Now his soul is no longer pulling in every direction. It has become settled. Like a weaned child resting with its mother, he has reached the place where he can simply rest in God without insisting that every question be answered immediately.
Most of us know what it feels like to have a restless soul. We ask God to open a door, heal a loved one, provide for a need, or change a difficult situation. Days pass, then weeks, and sometimes the answer still does not come. If we are honest, that waiting can leave us anxious and unsettled. David reminds us that while there is nothing wrong with bringing our requests to God, there is something even better than receiving an immediate answer. It is learning to trust the heart of the One who hears every prayer.
How to Find Rest for a Restless Soul
That kind of trust is not formed in a single day. It grows quietly as we keep walking with God, especially during the times when we can’t see what He is doing. We can all look back and remember times when the Lord seemed silent, only to discover that He was faithfully at work all along. Those experiences teach us that peace does not come from knowing everything. It comes from knowing the One who does.
Perhaps that is the invitation God is placing before you today. Instead of asking only for changed circumstances, ask Him to give you a quieter soul. Like the weaned child in David’s psalm, learn to rest in His presence even while you are still waiting. You may not have every answer you hoped for today, but you can be assured that the God who holds your future is also holding you.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, teach me to rest in You with a quiet and trusting heart. Whether You answer now or tell me to wait Help me to find my peace in Your presence, Your unfailing love.
