A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself, but the simple pass on and are punished.
Proverbs 22:3 (NKJV)
Mary watched as her thirteen-year-old son withdrew from the family. He guarded his phone, his grades slipped, and his teachers began expressing concern. She told herself it was just another stage of adolescence. Months later, she discovered he had become involved with online groups that encouraged gambling and other vices. Looking back, she realised the crisis had not begun when the school contacted her but when she brushed aside the warning signs.
How Does God Get Our Attention?
Life-changing problems rarely arise suddenly. They often begin with small changes that seem deceptively simple to explain away. That is the wisdom behind today’s key text. The prudent do not wait until they have done the damage before they act. They recognise danger early and respond to it. The simple keep moving in the same direction, hoping everything will work itself out, only to discover that ignoring a warning does not make the danger disappear.
God is gracious enough to warn us before we reach that point. He may use a passage of Scripture that continues to speak to the same issue. He may use the loving concern of a family member or a trusted friend. Occasionally He simply unsettles our hearts because He knows something needs to change. Those moments are not there to make us anxious. They are proof that God cares enough to bring us back before we go too far.
What Happens When We Ignore God’s Warnings?
The hardest part is that God’s warnings are usually quiet. There are no flashing lights or over-the-top moments. A neglected prayer life, a growing resentment, a careless compromise, and a drifting heart can all seem small at first. Left alone, though, they slowly mould our character and guide the decisions we make. Wisdom listens while God’s voice is still gentle instead of waiting until painful consequences leave us with regrets.
Is there something God has been bringing to your attention again and again? Don’t keep pushing it aside. Whatever He is asking you to surrender, confess, or change, respond today. His correction is never meant to shame you. It is one more reminder that you are deeply loved. But the safest place you can be is walking closely with Him, trusting in His wisdom long before the storm comes to your door.
Prayer
Almighty God, thank You for loving me enough to warn me before I get away from You. Help me to hear Your voice, to obey with a willing heart, to walk in the safety of Your wisdom each day.
