Why Good Intentions Are Not Enough

Daily Devotional – Monday, July 6, 2026
The soul of a lazy man desires and has nothing, but the soul of the diligent shall be made rich.
Proverbs 13:4 (NKJV)

Kevin had been talking about running a marathon for nearly a year. He bought new running shoes, followed experienced runners online, and even downloaded a training app. Every Monday he promised himself he would start training the next morning. Every Tuesday he found another excuse. When race day finally arrived, he stood behind the barriers cheering for friends who had put in the work. As he watched them cross the finish line, he realised his dream had remained just that: a dream. Wanting it had never been enough.

Wishing Is Not the Same as Working

The same can happen in our walk with God. We want to pray more, understand the Bible better, overcome a stubborn habit, or become more patient with the people around us. Those desires are good, yet they accomplish very little on their own. Proverbs draws a clear contrast between wishing and working. The lazy person keeps wanting, while the diligent person keeps moving. One lives on noble intentions. The other grows through faithful action.

God is not asking us to earn His love or work our way into heaven. His grace has already given us what we could never deserve. Still, spiritual growth is a matter of our willing involvement. We grow as we open His Word, spend time in prayer, obey what He teaches and keep choosing faithfulness when it would be easier to give up. Those daily choices may seem ordinary, but God often does His greatest work through ordinary faithfulness.

Why Good Intentions Are Not Enough

Real growth is usually much slower than we would like. A stronger faith, a restored relationship, or a transformed character is rarely built overnight. It develops one choice at a time. One prayer leads to another. One act of obedience strengthens the next. One day of faithfulness becomes another. We may not notice much difference from one day to the next, but over time God shapes us into people who look more like Christ.

Kevin watched others finish the race because they had trained while he had only talked about it. His story reminds us that desire has to be followed by action. If God has placed something on your heart today, take the first step instead of waiting for the perfect moment. A few faithful steps with God will always take you farther than a thousand good intentions that never leave the starting line.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me the desire to grow in You. Help me to align that desire with faithful action, trusting that You will use each small step to mould me into the person You want me to be.
