Does God Reward Generosity?

Daily Devotional – Sunday, July 12, 2026
Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.
Luke 6:38 (NKJV)

For years, a primary school teacher quietly shaped lives beyond the classroom. She noticed children others overlooked, celebrated even the smallest improvements and corrected mistakes without crushing anyone’s confidence. After she retired, age and illness made everyday life difficult. Then former students started showing up. Some brought groceries. Others helped pay her medical bills. Many simply came to spend time with the woman who had once believed in them. They were giving back what they had first received from her.

The Harvest of a Generous Heart

Many people read today’s verse and immediately think about money. They assume Jesus was promising financial returns for financial generosity. Yet that is not what He was talking about. In the verses leading up to this promise, Jesus spoke about judging, condemning and forgiving. Then He said, “Give.” The giving He had in mind included mercy, grace, forgiveness and kindness. Those are gifts that never appear on a bank statement, yet they often leave the deepest mark on a person’s life.

Life has a way of reflecting what we consistently pour into it. People who are generous with encouragement often find themselves surrounded by it. Those who are quick to forgive usually build relationships where forgiveness is freely given. That does not mean every kind act will be repaid by the same person, or even in the same season. It simply means God has woven a beautiful principle into life. He delights in using generous hearts to spread His goodness, and He often sends that goodness back in ways we never expected.

Does God Reward Generosity?

That makes this verse deeply personal. Every day, we are giving something to the people around us. A conversation can leave someone feeling valued or discouraged. A response can offer patience or irritation. A disagreement can be handled with grace or with harshness. Long after our words are forgotten, their impact often remains. The measure we choose today may shape someone’s tomorrow, and occasionally our own as well.

Before you move through today’s conversations, pause for a moment and ask yourself, What measure am I carrying? If Christ has been generous with His mercy toward you, let that mercy overflow to others. Offer the encouragement, patience and forgiveness you would hope to receive yourself. You may never know how far those gifts will go, but God does. And in His perfect timing, the generous measure you give in someone else’s life may come back to you.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for being so generous with Your grace and mercy towards me. Help me to reflect Your heart by freely giving kindness, forgiveness and encouragement to others. Let my life be a channel for Your love to flow through to those around me.
