Have You Lost Your Hunger for God?

Daily Devotional – Thursday, July 23, 2026
A satisfied soul loathes the honeycomb, but to a hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.
Proverbs 27:7 (NKJV)

After coming to Christ, Samuel could not have enough of the Bible. He woke up early to read it before work, carried a small New Testament wherever he went, and looked forward to every church service. As the years passed, his career flourished, his responsibilities increased, and life became increasingly comfortable. His Bible still rested on the bedside table, but unopened mornings slowly became unopened weeks. The Bible had not changed. Samuel had.

The Silent Danger of Spiritual Satisfaction

That kind of change does not happen overnight. Over time, our priorities shift. What used to anchor our day becomes something we hope we have time to fit in. Solomon used the familiar images of hunger and satisfaction to show how our appetite controls what we value. The honey was no less sweet. The appetite of the person tasting it changed. The same principle reaches far beyond food and speaks directly to our relationship with God.

God has not become distant or less faithful. His Word is still as living and powerful as ever. When our desire for Him begins to fade, the change has taken place in us, not in Him. We often assume we are simply busy for a season, yet the days become weeks before we notice how little time we spend listening to His voice. A full schedule, a successful career, and endless distractions can quietly crowd out the One who once held first place in our hearts.

Have You Lost Your Hunger for God?

Samuel never decided to drift away from God. Life simply became fuller. Meetings replaced quiet mornings. Deadlines crowded out unhurried moments with Scripture. By the time he noticed the change, opening his Bible before the day began no longer felt natural. Perhaps you have experienced something similar. Spiritual hunger rarely disappears in a single moment. It fades one small compromise at a time until the desire we once had for God no longer feels as strong as it once did.

Perhaps your Bible is still where it has always been, just as Samuel’s was. The question is not whether God has stopped speaking. The question is whether your heart is still listening. If other pursuits have quietly taken His place, today is a good day to return. Open His Word again. Spend time in prayer again. Ask the Lord to restore your appetite for Him. A heart that stays hungry for God will never run out of reasons to seek Him, because He always satisfies those who come to Him.

Prayer
Lord, stir a new hunger within me for Your presence. Lead me to Your Word each day and help me treasure You in every blessing and duty.
