The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him.
Nahum 1:7 (NKJV)
One late afternoon a young man, far from home, saw dark clouds roll in. He had no umbrella, and within minutes the rain started pouring down. He saw a small building close by and ran in. While finding shelter did not end the storm, it gave him a safe place to wait until the rain passed. Life can feel much the same. Trouble can arrive without warning, leaving us wondering what to do and where to turn. In those moments, we quickly discover what, or who, we have been depending on.
Where Is God When Trouble Comes?
Today’s key text points us to a dependable place: “The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him.” Prophet Nahum was speaking in a time of profound uncertainty. Nineveh, the powerful capital of Assyria, stood as a symbol of oppression and violence, and God’s judgement against it was coming. Yet in the middle of this serious message, Nahum reminds God’s people of something they needed to remember. The Lord is good. He is not merely powerful enough to confront evil. He is also a safe refuge for those who put their trust in Him.
The phrase “in the day of trouble” deserves our attention. Nahum does not promise that people who trust God will never experience trouble. He tells us where we can find security when trouble comes. God Himself is our stronghold. A stronghold was a place of safety, a place where people could run when danger threatened. The verse ends with a very personal statement: “He knows those who trust in Him.” God sees those who put their trust in Him, knows them as His, and cares for them. Our struggles never make us strangers to God.
When You Have Nowhere Else to Turn
Think again about the man caught in the rain. Once he found shelter, he could hear the rain pounding outside without having to stand exposed to it. His circumstances had not changed, but his position had. That is often what faith looks like. We may pray and still have to wait. We may trust God and still face difficult news, financial pressure, disappointment, uncertainty, or loss. Faith does not require us to pretend that everything is fine. It invites us to bring our fears to a God who remains faithful when life feels anything but good.
Where do you turn when trouble comes? Do you immediately retreat into worry, depend entirely on your own strength, or look to people and things that cannot carry the weight of your heart? Today, bring your trouble to God and be honest with Him. Tell Him what frightens you. Tell Him what you do not understand. Then choose to trust Him, even while you wait for the situation to change. The storm may continue for a while, but you do not have to face it alone. The Lord is your stronghold, and he knows those who trust in him.
Prayer
Almighty God, when trouble comes, help me to turn to you and not be overcome with fear. Remind me You are good, You are my stronghold, and You know and care for those who trust You.
