And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.

Jesus was training His disciples for the gospel ministry. They would go from place to place, depending on the hospitality of others, and sometimes discover that following Him did not make them important in the eyes of everyone they met. Some of them would be welcomed; others would be ignored or waved away. In that setting, Jesus spoke about something remarkably ordinary. He talked about giving one of His followers a cup of cold water. He Jesus wanted His disciples to understand that even the simplest act of kindness can matter when it is done because of Him.
When Nobody Notices What You Do
A cup of cold water was not an expensive gift. It was something to give to someone who was thirsty and tired. Jesus also spoke about “these little ones.” He was talking about His followers who don’t seem to be very important or influential. They may have little wealth, status or renown. Still, Jesus cared about how people treated them. When someone offered a disciple water, that person was showing that he valued the disciple because he belonged to Christ. The water itself was ordinary. What made the act meaningful was the reason it was given.
We often overlook this kind of service because we tend to measure our usefulness by what can be seen. We notice the person preaching to a crowd, leading a ministry, raising money, or taking on a major responsibility. Then we look at our lives and wonder whether what we can offer is enough. Jesus points us to something much simpler. A cup of water was enough to make His point. What matters is not whether the act looks impressive, but whether we are willing to use what we have to care for someone who belongs to Him.
The Small Thing Jesus Never Overlooks
Think about the opportunities that come across your path. Someone may need encouragement after a difficult week. A person serving in church may need someone to notice the effort they are making. A neighbour may need practical help. A young person may need someone who will listen without rushing them. A colleague may simply need a kind word on a difficult day. None of these things may look like important ministry. Yet they may be precisely where someone needs to experience the love of Christ. Sometimes serving God looks less like standing before a crowd and more like noticing the person standing beside you.
So look around you today. Who could use your “cup of cold water”? Maybe you have time to give, encouragement to offer, knowledge to share, or a simple kindness that could make someone’s day a little easier. Do not hold back because what you have seems too small. You may never know what that moment means to the person receiving it, and nobody else may notice what you did. Jesus notices. He sees the reason behind what you do, even when others do not. What feels like a small thing in your hands may be one of the ways you show Him that you care.
Prayer
Almighty God, help me notice the simple opportunities to serve You through the people around me. Give me a willing heart to give what I have even when it seems so little. Help me serve without recognition and remember that You see all acts of love.
