Daily Devotional – Monday, August 31, 2026
If you return, then I will bring you back; you shall stand before Me; if you take out the precious from the vile, you shall be as My mouth. Let them return to you, but you must not return to them.
Jeremiah 15:19 (NKJV)
Jeremiah was in a difficult situation. Despite faithfully delivering the Lord’s message, his ministry was marked by rejection, opposition and loneliness. People would rather not hear what he had to say. In the passages preceding today’s key text, Jeremiah poured out his pain to God and wondered why his suffering seemed to go on. His experience reminds us that despite obeying God, we will still have days when we feel weary, hurt or alone.
Don’t Leave Your Ground
God answered Jeremiah by calling him back. He pledged to restore him and let him stand before Him once more. God had not given up on Jeremiah. He still wanted him to continue the work He had given him. But Jeremiah needed to come back from the place where discouragement had taken hold of his heart and let God steady him. His difficult feelings had not cancelled his calling.
God then told Jeremiah to take out “the precious from the vile.” Jeremiah spoke for God, so he needed to choose carefully what he would say. He could not allow his pain and frustration to shape the message he gave the people. God called him to hold on to what was valuable and true. Then God told him, “You shall be as My mouth.” Despite everything Jeremiah was going through, God still wanted to use him. Don’t let disappointment or anger or pressure control what you say and do when your heart is full of it. Bring them to God and let him lead you.
What Will You Do Under Pressure?
The people Jeremiah spoke to did not want to change. They resisted God’s message. So God told Jeremiah, “Let them return to you, but you must not return to them.” Jeremiah could not change God’s message simply because people did not like it. You may face that kind of pressure too. A friend may ask you to join in something you know is wrong. You may feel tempted to change just to fit in. Sometimes it is easier to go with the crowd than to do what you know that God wants you to do.
Maybe you feel that pressure today. Perhaps you are tired of standing alone. Possibly you have started wondering whether giving in would make life easier. Like Jeremiah, tell God how you feel. Ask Him to steady your heart and help you see things clearly again. Don’t leave what God has shown you to be right simply because other people disagree. Stay close to Him. Stay faithful. Surrender the future to God.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, You know when I feel discouraged and pressured to the point of quitting. Strengthen my heart and guide my words and actions.
